Ideas for the Toothless Wonder?

We are nearing 14 months and Dylan still does not have any teeth. Nottaone.

He is, and has been for a looong time now, eating mostly Stage 2 baby food, with the occasional puff here and there. He is doing a bit better now with crackers - he will attempt to self-feed before throwing them to the dogs below.

I have changed my mind (for the gazillionth time) about the sippy cup and have given the ol' Honey Bear another go. He is now able to sip from the straw appropriately, but still doesn't completely grasp the swallowing thing. Most of the liquid comes back out - but - it is coming, I know it.

My question is - where do I go from here? I'm not sure that he should still be on mostly baby food at this age, but with no teeth, do I have many other options? I would love to hear some ideas on this, as I'm feeling a bit...stuck.'s 8 in the morning and wouldn't you know I am off to try to tame a terrible two tantrum brought on by the mention of potty training, naturally. Good grief.

Do you have a Speech Therapist? He/she could help with all of those questions. Not sure how it is where you live, but Illinois provides you with one visit a week from an ST. Jack's ST has helped us start drinking from a straw and she'll tell me when to move onto a sippy cup...and then an open cup.

Emily is 10 months and on stage 3 food. It really isn't much chunkier than the stage 2...just a little thicker. Some of them have chunks, but she uses her gums to mush it up. She did just get a tooth, but it so small that I don't think it helps any. Good Luck!

Nate is still toothless and eating stage 2 foods as well. We are working with a SLP to help us with eating/swallowing - also a nutritionist (just to make sure Nate is getting all he needs - especially since I've weaned him from b-fing during the day). We realized that Nate is still sucking his food rather than moving it around with his tongue. I am trying to put the food into the sides of his mouth to help strengthen that bi-lateral tongue movement. We also try using our nuk brush as well - though Nate mostly likes to bang it and throw it on the floor - haha. Is Dylan's issue mostly with swallowing? We are also adding thick-it to his milk and trying a variety of sippy cups. I would love to try honey-bear/straw soon. Where did you get your honey bear straw cup?
GL! Know that you're not alone with this issue ; )

Maher is 16 months old. He got his first tooth(upper right bi-cuspid)last month but it is barely through the gums so it doesn't help at all. He is still on stage two baby foods and some stage three fruits and veggies. He still drinks formula from a bottle. We are introducing whole milk and he tolerates it very well. Juice freaks him out. I am hoping that he will soon figure out a straw so we can move to a straw-sippy cup. You are not alone.

hmmm. Sam is 13 months and is getting his first tooth. It's pushed through the skin but still very little to show for it. He wraps his lips around the sippie cup but doesn't suck. He hates babyfood so we just give him people food and he gums it to death. I fix pancakes for breakfast and he gums it. He still likes his rice cereal though. For lunch I fix a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich and just give him little pieces and he gums it. He also likes cheese quesadillas which he also gums. I have a hard time giving him all the food groups though since he doesn't eat baby food and can't eat all people food with no teeth. I mash up bananas for him as well. Hope those suggestions help.

hey stranger : )

Kayden just got her 1st tooth this month so they are coming : )

try mashed taters, and Kayden like mac and cheese (cut up small. She does pastas (even tuna helper- cut up of course) and bits of toast and tortilla (sometimes with a little melted cheese on it). We also started the gerber graduates pick ups ravioli so she can learn to get the food to her mouth herself ! And there is always the stuff I get for Caitlins lunches- applesauce cups (for a new texture) and the fruit cups (pears) and you can add that to his cereals. Dear old Dad was giving her a pudding cup the other day ! And we have tried ice cream and Popsicle pieces- she didnt eve nmind the cold and loved the ice cream.

Just think soft and things that can be mushed !

Look for the gerber graduates they have baby cheetos in cheese and veggie flavors that dissolve in their mouths but let them learn how to feed themselves ! We also found these breadstick looking things called fiddlesticks in the "toddler" food area. Even though they arent toddling around they can eat the "crawler" stuff.

If you cant find it- let me know and I'll send you a texas care package !!!

I know its frustrating and it may take a couple of times introducing something new- but DONT give up ! Kayden fed her self an entire thing of gerber ravioli last night !!! (we did cut them in half to make sure they would go down (when we did 1/4 they were too small for her to pick up). THINK POTENTIAL !!! I keep telling the other girls that we will NOT baby her and we expect her to do everything everyone else her age is doing ! I am so ready for her to learn how to use a spoon so I can actually eat my own meal before it gets

Good luck and let me know if you need a box from texas !

I am pretty sure that they can gum a lot of foods and eat textures even without teeth. You could add cottage cheese mixed with small pieces of fruit, yogurt, jello, and applesauce to the mix. Benjamin eats all of that.

Also, please don't stress about potty training Cassidy. If she is not ready yet or is fighting it, just let her wear diapers! We never did anything with Andrew b/c he was never interested in the potty until about a month after he turned three. It took a handful of days and he was completely trained. He still wears a diaper for bedtime just in case but wears undies at nap and all day.

Ozzie has his 2 top and 2 bottom front teeth but I don't think he uses them for much more than an occasional chewing of those wagon wheel things. But he does eat grilled cheese sandwiches (tiny pieces of course) and kraft mac and cheese. I think he mashes them up a bit before swallowing (I only give him one or two pieces at a time.) I didn't even think of trying these things til we were in the hospital for his adenoids and they gave him a grilled cheese sandwich and I decided to go ahead and give it a try. He gobbled it up. Sometimes I just need a push to let him try new stuff and he does better than I expect.

Clara is almost 15 months, has six teeth and is in the process of cutting four more. However, Clara has been eating processed portions of our meals since before she started cutting teeth. If we are short on time or our meals are a bit too seasoned, we feed her homeade baby food (more texture than jarred Stage 2 baby food), mac and cheese, pasta pickups, etc. Initially we processed our meals and/or homeade baby food using a small food processor, but we can now either cut items into small pieces or use a hand chopper (such as the Pampered Chef Food Chopper) which does not process as fine as the food processor. Annabel Karmel has published several baby/toddler food cookbooks with excellent recipes and has a website with recipes. Clara's favorites include fish with vegetables and cheese (cook in the microwave and run through the food processor) and pasta with spinach and cheese.

My little one with DS is 2 and has plenty of teeth but because she spent her life in an orphanage in Asia (until 6 weeks ago when we adopted her!), her oral-motor skills are very limited. She doesn't understand how to chew (working on that with ECI). But, she's doing really well with "gumming" Stage 3 baby food and she also will "gum" cheerios, animal crackers (broken into pieces), pop corn and potato chips. You might try some of those things - it's amazing what you can eat without teeth! :)

We used a "food mill" with both boys - not just Matthew. It grinds up anything into a consistency that a kiddo without teeth can eat. I didn't like feeding the kids nothing but processed baby food . . . and the idea of paying for expensive baby food that was mostly water! With this thing, they could eat whatever we had - veggies, fruit . . . even steak! Here's the link:

So I took the plunge -- bought myself a Fatman iTube Carbon Edition 2 and I've got to say I made out like a bandit. I actually listened to one at a friend's house several months back and just couldn't get that quality out of my head because it blew me away. I searched everywhere for a great deal and finally found it at Ordio in Westfield Bondi Junction. I telephoned them first and asked every question I could think of and everything was answered to my satisfaction so I went ahead and made the purchase. Shipping was very fast. Everything was perfect. I'm pretty darn happy and I'm playing it right now. Not sure if they ship outside of Australia but you won't be sorry if they do.

I am crazy happy about it...
