A little follow-up

I just want to thank you all for your wonderful comments on my last post. I read them all aloud to Dylan, who is very pleased as well.
See?

Dylan's EI nurse was here this morning, so I was able to speak with her about my feelings regarding the upcoming evaluation. She totally understood where I was coming from in regards to the whole age placement situation and agreed that it was not necessary for me to see or hear that information. Hm, that sounds kind of weird...I do not mean that I want to live in a world of denial here, it's just that I would love to be able to assess Dylan on what he can do as opposed to what other 6 month old babies who do not have Down syndrome can. Anyway, his nurse said that we will focus on where Dylan is at right now with his goals and then discuss where we want to go next.

So, I feel good about that. Much better than I did a few days ago, that's for sure.

Thank you again for all of your support. We love you!

That is good that you are speaking up! Dylan has overcome so many obstacles in his life and he is doing great. He will do things in his own time when he is ready. What is the rush any way?!

Laurie...I feel ya...I wish they didn't always focus on typical charts...Our little ones will amaze us at their own pace and I'm glad his therapist is not going to compare, compare, compare....DYLAN is just so darn adorable...I know I say that always, but he really is a little sweetheart and heartbreaker...

That's great. Also, I didn't think it was possible for that kid to get any cuter, but he has. Such a great smile!

And where'd you get those PJs? Love them!

Hi Laurie- I came upon Dylan's picture and had to stop by. I met my friend's son Dan when he was 5 wks old. He has DS and started EI young. He has always attended reg. school. He has been involved in special olympic(swim), works and is the football manager. He graduates from HS in June and will be attending college at a local university. Tina and I recently laughed and cried as we realized that we never dreamed we would be discussing his college. Dream Big!

I really wonder what is really the purpose of ranking and rating and evaluating our sweet little ones. I mean, can't they just say - "o.k., here's where his is with his motor skills, and the next step is (whatever) - let's see if we can help him with that."

We kind of give Matthew his first 8 months off . . . I mean, he didn't have a working heart and every ounce of energy he had was going toward just keeping him alive! He didn't have anything left for "development." So, even though technically he's 16 months old, we say, "LOOK how far he's come in the last 8 months!" Because, really, that's all he's had to work on the development stuff.

When it comes down to it, EVERY milestone is a huge accomplishment, worthy of celebration. You are absolutely right to focus on what he CAN do.

Besides . . . enjoy the time when he's more immobile - he'll be tearing around your house getting into all kinds of trouble soon enough!! :-) haha
