The Ol' Endoscopy...

...didn't happen. And the reason for the cancellation wasn't exactly because of poor health, either.

At around 9:30 yesterday morning, (after 3 hours of trying to distract Dylan from the fact that yes, he was indeed hungry, and unfortunately still had about 4 1/2 more hours to go before surgery time) the anesthesiologist called my house asking if I "had a few minutes?". He told me that there must have been an oversight with the scheduling as, in his opinion, given Dylan's age, heart history, and diagnosis of Ds, Dylan should have been given the first procedure time slot of the day - a surgery time of 7:30 a.m as opposed to 2 p.m. This first procedure time slot would mean a shorter fasting period, thus the chance of becoming dehydrated less likely. He said that he did not feel comfortable proceeding with Dylan's endoscopy given the circumstances. He said he's been doing "this" long enough and has seen things "that did not need to go badly, go badly and that the most important thing here was to keep Dylan safe".

I agreed.

But that doesn't change the fact that because of someone's mistakes, we have had to pay the price. We are on to surgery date number 3 now, which is scheduled for November 24Th at 7:30 a.m.

And as time continues on, and Dylan's spit up worsens, I am finding that my frustration level isn't the only thing that is increasing. My confusion level is as well. I fluctuate between wanting to just cancel the whole ordeal chalking it all up to low muscle tone, and fighting the desire to march him directly into the ER so that we can have immediate attention.

For now, though, we'll wait. We'll be patient. Again.

Oh, Laurie! That stinks, but at least one of the doctors was paying attention for what is in Dylan's best interest... and that isn't to be dehydrated for that many hours, given his cardiac issues. I have to say that for us, the GI admissions and ER visits were among the most useless, since they never did any diagnostic procedures during them. Instead, they wanted to 'observe' Bobby's feeds (because apparently our reports of constant vomiting 7-8 times a day were insufficient, and instead needed to be observed by the staff, who essentially documented them but did nothing). The best results were by pushing the GI doc outpatient to conduct the endoscopy, etc, as you are doing. Sigh. Sending you and Dylan a big virtual hug and lots of positive energy. Hang in there!

Best,
Valerie

AGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! so sorry that the scheduling person was not paying attention to Dylan's age, heart issues and Ds diagnosis - I hate that you had to reschedule again, but I am so thankful that nothing went wrong because at least the anesthesiologist was conscientious enough to realize it would not be a good idea to do the procedure on Dylan at 2 p.m. Hopefully all will come together on 11/24 for a perfect procedure at 7:30a.m. and you will have some answers and not only answers, but solutions too!!! thinking of you!

Laurie if anyone deserves a break right now that would definitely have to be you! I feel so stinkin' bad for you! I would be furious and jumping out of my skin with anger. You also get the award for the most perseverence. You are amazing! On the positive side Dylan's safety was put first and that is extremely important! I pray that the third time is the last time and that all will go as planned and you will finally get some answers to Dylan's vomiting issues. ((HUGS))
